We’re cutting down on plastic. We’re delighted to finally introduce our new 100% compostable bowls. Almost 20 months in the making to get this to store, we have designed a bowl and a lid that reduces our plastic output significantly. Same bowl. Same portion. Just a hell of a lot less plastic.
We have taken many small steps over the last 2 years; introducing our 100% compostable coffee cups & lids, our degradable cutlery and our smaller Vegware pots. Adding to our compostable wrap paper and compostable Kraft paper carrier bags. Our salad bowls and lids have always been our main issue, although made from recycled RPET in Ireland which was more sustainable than most offerings out there, we needed to do better. A LOT better.
More info on the product itself
Our new bowls and lids are made from bagasse which is a natural by-product of sugarcane production. It is the fibre that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice. As a by-product of this production, bagasse does not require additional cultivation areas and has no impact on the area of forests.
Our new bagasse bowls and lids are 100% compostable – the rate of decomposition depends on the composting conditions such as the temperature, turnover rate, moisture etc. Just like other compostable material, products will biodegrade much faster, if they are broken into smaller pieces. They will biodegrade at the same rate as garden waste in a home composting system, which depending on the system can be approximately between 90 and 120 days.
We are very proud to make this small change to help tackle a much bigger issue. We’ve been driving for a more sustainable business model for years now especially around our food waste, and will continue to drive for change in the area of sustainability moving forward.
Our next step
We will be introducing our new re-usable bowls and cups before Christmas. Remember you get 20c off your coffee at Chopped if you bring your own reusable cup, and we accept BYO bowl at our counters. Just make sure to ask your server at the counter.
